Welcome to GGBC

The Goring Gap Boat Club is one of the largest recreational boating clubs in the Thames valley.

Membership is open to all, from youngsters gaining their first rowing experience to veterans with a life time on the river. Beginners are assured of a warm welcome, and a relaxed and safe introduction to the sport. No previous experience is required, and we provide tuition to all our new members.

The clubs' aims are simple - "...to make it possible for members to enjoy un-powered boating....". Over the years it's estimated that 1500 rowers have taken to the water under the guidance of GGBC, many of them competing in the ever popular Goring and Streatley Regatta.

The centrepiece of the club's activity is the annual Goring and Streatley Regatta, which combines fun racing (for all the family) with live entertainment, a fun fair, food, craft fairs and much more. It's a 'not to be missed' event with some 600 rowers competing and a crowd of over 5000 people. A great atmosphere for competing and a superb day out for all the family.

With the increased interest in rowing as both a leisure pursuit and a competitive sport GGBC has made strides towards providing some great facilities. Recent arrivals have been a superb coaching / safety launch, 4 brand new sculls, and a double gig. We've also purchased the less exotic items....cox box, blades etc that make everyone's rowing a better experience. See the Rowing page.

All are welcome to come along and try their hand at rowing .... it's great to be out on the river keeping fit, meeting new friends and enjoying the wonderful scenery. See the Membership page for full details.

If rowing sounds too much like hard work give the punts a go....

The club is currently based at the Oratory School boathouse  in Whitchurch on Thames, and also has facilities for punting at the Swan hotel in Streatley (ideal for a leisurely picnic with friends). We have a large range of boats available from single sculls to eights, the majority of our rowing being in stable fours and quad boats - ideal for getting to grips with the basics before moving on to the finer shells.

News from the AGM A brief summary of the AGM and message from the GGBC chairman

Over 40 members were able to attend, and many took the opportunity to share their views on the main agenda points. Thank you to everyone who did so. It is clear that opinions are diverse and strongly held, particularly those relating to the location of the club. The minutes of an AGM cannot be finalised until they have been voted on at the subsequent AGM, but the new Committee will endeavor to make preliminary minutes of the 2011 AGM available as soon as possible.

In advance of these minutes, I can confirm the following decisions -

1/. Membership fees will be held at the current level.

2/. The Boathouse Proposal was passed, and provides a clear direction for the new Committee regarding the long term future of the club.

3/. Richard, Karen, Tim, Stuart, Karl, Hedley and Geoff stood down from the Committee. These individuals have all given a great deal of their time to the club over many years for the benefit of us all. This was rightly recognised at the AGM, and I am sure that those members who could not attend would also like to add their own thanks.

4/. A new Committee was elected as follows -

Chairman - Hugh Baker-Smith

Secretary - Simone Larche

Treasurer - Lorraine Slade

Membership Secretary - Sue Hughes

Captain of Boats - Andy McKenzie

Regatta Chairman - Ros Crowder

Social Secretary - Neil Derbyshire

Committee Member - Brian Barnes

Committee Member - Matthew Crowder

Committee Member - Roger Moore

Committee Member - Kay Walker

Committee Member - Sally Lightfoot

The post of Captain of Rowing will remain vacant for the time being.

I was elected Chairman on the basis that I would endeavour to make the process of securing the long term future of the club more transparent, more balanced, and less pressured. I will be writing to you next week to outline some of the initial actions aimed at achieving this.

In the meantime, I hope that as many of you as possible will take advantage of the relatively mild weather and come along to the club session on Sunday.

With best regards

Hugh

Regatta - What a Fabulous Day! - The sun shone, the crowds rolled in and everyone had a great time....

A big thank you to all who attended and helped to make the day a great success, and of course a special thanks to those involved with organising and helping out.

Special guest Zac Purchase inspired our crews to new heights of performance....although quite a few may have had trouble with the drug testing regime at the higher levels of the sport!

And of course we must mention Toad who entertained the crowds and showed of his own impressive array of gold medals.....luckily the police were keeping a low profile...

Fully report and photos coming soon....

Celebrating in style

Henley Regatta - GGBC made their annual pilgrimage to the regatta.... and enjoyed every minute! A chance to e dress up, have a picnic by the river, and watch the top crews in action....

It spurred on some of our members to higher ambitions .....although reality may kick in once the alcohol has worn off!

A great day out - fabulous weather, great company and some superb homemade pies!

.....and a winning time in the 'Rampant Sporting' erging competition......a remarkable 17.4 sec for the 100m sprint.

Many thanks to Kay for organising the outing....see you all next year.

GGBC member through to semi finals at Henley. Club member Neil Mackenzie guided his eight through to the next round with an easy win.  With just 2 days of racing to go the tension is rising.....Can Abingdon overcome the dominance of Eton College over the past few years....

We'll be cheering on Abingdon.....and GGBC on Sunday!

Call for Regatta Volunteers
Your club needs YOU!

Site set-up - Weds 20th - Friday 22nd & Sun 24th July

The Site team will need all the volunteers they can get in order to prepare the site in the run up to regatta. Sessions are as follows.

- Weds 20/7. AM (approx 9.30 - 1.00). PM (approx 2.00 - 5.00).
  Evening (approx 5.30 - 8.30)
- Thurs 21/7. AM/PM/Evening - as above
- Fri 22/7. AM/PM as above.
- Sun 24/7. AM (approx 9.30 - 2.00pm) Clearance of Site.

If you are able to help at the site on any one (or more) of these sessions please email Stu (captainofrowing@goringgapbc.org.uk) your details and when you will be available. That way we can plan the work better and make sure there is good planning and briefing of the jobs to make your time worthwhile.

As an extra benefit, we will be providing lunch for those working both am and pm shifts on Weds - Fri!

Regatta Day – Saturday 23rd July

On the day itself we really need as many GGBC members as possible to give up at least 2 hours in order to assist with the many rowing and non rowing activities which need to be carried out.

This includes coxing, race control, selling tickets, helping with and supervising the gate and car parking operations, cash collection, manning the boat club tent, and a variety of other jobs.

We are looking to break the day down into 2 hour slots as below. 9am - 11am, 11am - 1pm, 1pm - 3pm, 3pm - 5pm, 5pm - 7pm.

There is a lot to be done and we would be very grateful if as many members as possible could come forward in order to support the event. The regatta is rightly regarded by spectators and competitors alike as a fantastic event and a credit to our club - however, we cannot maintain it as such without extensive support from GGBC members.

If you want to discuss any of the jobs further, then please contact Stu - captainofrowing@goringgapbc.org.uk

Learn2Rowers Excel - the second L2R course this year .... and the talent just continues to amaze! The final session on Saturday was the culmination of four weeks hard training: fitness, co-ordination, and teambuilding were all key aspects.

But it's performance on the day that counts.....and both our crews excelled. The first unexpected challenge was on the ergs -  two crews pitted head to head in a gruelling sprint.  It was a close race with everyone putting in personnel best performances.....but this was just the 'dynamic warm-up' for the main event.

Out in the eights things got more serious. No more gentle exercises - but hardcore racing starts, and full pressure pieces. Both crews limbered up and despite some shaky moments (pre-race nerves?), the concentration levels were 110%.

Just to make things a little more interesting the heavens opened and drenched our rowers during the first skill test - minimum strokes. A very close and rather controversial contest with one crew's cox seeming to have a lapse of memory when it came to toting up the scores....

Learn2Rowers celebrate with their much deserved L2R mugs

However this was nothing compared with the final 500m race! Both crews lined up and made exceptional good starts.....Tim's crew took a slight lead and at 200m were almost 3/4 of a length in front......when disaster struck! A crab lead to total disarray with the crew losing their composure...Paul's crews sped by taking full advantage of their superior technique. A length up and 200m to go it seemed as if victory was there for the taking.....but the crew were feeling the effects and fatigue began to set in.

Tim's crew regained their composure and started to sprit with renewed vigour - the boat surged forwarded with every stroke.... half a length down, a canvas.......and at the finish it was too close to call - a dead heat!

Paul's crew revel in their outstanding achievement

Tim's crew celebrate being in the most
exciting race since Sydney

Many thanks to all the participants for being such fun to work with, to the countless GGBC volunteers that were always on hand to help out. Watch out for our Learn2Row graduates at the G&S regatta ....definitely worth an each way bet!
